Vidya Balan gets candid about her upcoming film Tumhari Sulu ahead of its release.

It’s been not less than a decade since fans have watched Vidya Balan serenade them with “Good Morning Mumbai” in Lage Raho Munnaibhai. Ten years later, she is back to playing a radio jockey, albeit with a twist. In her next film, Tumhari Sulu, Vidya will be seen essaying the role of a housewife by the day and an RJ by the night who has to speak to her audiences in a sexy tone. But, it’s the transformation of Sulu from a sari-clad middle-aged housewife to a fun, energetic, and feisty RJ that is the film’s highlight. With just a few days remaining before the release of Tumhari Sulu, India.com met up with Vidya to have a fun interaction with her about the film.

According to Vidya, she and her on-screen character in the film are pretty alike. When asked how much Sulu she sees in Vidya, the 38-year-old actress replied, “I have seen a lot of Vidya in Sulu and vice versa. I think both of us are mad and laugh a lot, but once we start laughing, we cannot stop. I think we’re both raring to go all the time. We both believe that ‘Main Kar sakti hai,’ but ‘Sulu Vidya se bhi zyada kar sakti hai.’ (Sulu can do more than Vidya) .” The versatile actress had a fun time shooting for the film. The promos and the trailer are enough to testify that. But ask her what the most entertaining element of playing Sulu on screen was, and she’ll quip, “What I loved about it was that I could laugh during a scene. I am someone who laughs a lot, and I would always be doing serious films, which I love, but during the take, I couldn’t laugh, and I’m someone who feels like laughing all the time. So, at least now I could legitimately laugh during a scene.” We can’t get over her laugh at the end of the trailer!

Although this was not the first time she played an RJ, Vidya needed to prep a lot to slip into the skin of her onscreen character. Surprisingly, she did not follow any one particular RJ. When we asked her who she took cues from to get the ‘on-air’ charisma right, she said she didn’t have anyone in particular but a mix of them from whom she picked up the nuances. “There is not one, honestly. You know, the most successful RJs have a unique style and can connect with the audiences in a very personal way. So there are lots of them. I can’t think of just one person, but I must say that Malishka is someone whose style I imbibed, particularly during Lage Raho Munnabhai. This time around, I didn’t refer to any specific person. ” Interesting, Malishka will also be starring in the film. She also said that she would always choose to be an actress as she loves acting and would not have traded the career for anything else. We also had a fun rapid-fire segment with her. Take a look at the video below:

Helmed by Suresh Triveni, Tumhari Sulu also stars Neha Dhupia and Manav Kaul in pivotal roles. The film was shot 42 days after it went on floors on April 23 this year. Earlier, it was supposed to be released on December 1. Still, the makers pushed the release to an earlier date to avoid its clash with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, Padmavati, which is slated to release then. As Vidya said, Tumhari Sulu is more of a happy film than a slice-of-life drama, and it is set to hit screens on November 17.
