Nucleya aka Udyan Sagar gets candid with After hrs ahead of his gig in Pune.
Very few indie musicians can claim to have contributed to the global music scene like DJ and producer Nucleya, aka Udyan Sagar, has. Having started his music career in the 90s, co-founding Bandish Projekt, Udyan has taken the electronic.

Nucleya has taken the music scene by storm over the years, creating and popularising a novel brand of Indian-influenced dubstep/electronica. Apart from having performed at several music festivals across the globe, like Glastonbury, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and others, his tracks frequently feature on the playlists of BBC Radio 1 and many other international radio stations. He is in the city today to enthrall EDM fans with his groovy tracks at Olive Bistro, and he gets chatty with Ishani Bose about all things music.

The first album you ever bought

Back in school, I bought my first album, Fat of the Land, by Prodigy.

Artists you love listening to and wish to collaborate with

In the electronic genre, I really like Skrillex, and among the younger artists, I like Munchi. Among Indian music producers, I really love Salim Sulaiman’s works. Benny Dayal has an interesting voice. Mia and Chennai-based artists Chinnaponnu and Anthony Das are excellent, too. There are so many artistes, but it’s challenging to jot everyone’s name down.

Your most memorable performance

My most memorable performance so far was in Delhi during the David Guetta tour. There were 5000-6000 people present out there, and it was amazing performing in front of such a vast, energetic audience.

Your most embarrassing performance till date

I won’t call it embarrassing, but it was funny nonetheless. A certain organiser of an event had once called me to play at his club in Bangalore, stating that there would be 2,000-3,000 people present, but on reaching the place, we saw that there was no one there. It was quite a funny and awkward experience

What’s up your sleeve next?

I’m currently waiting for my EP and visual set to launch, which is scheduled for September. The name for my EP hasn’t been decided yet. But, it will feature collaborations with artists from different parts of the country and abroad, like Chinnaponnu, Bengali singer Mou Sultana, who collaborated with me for the track Bangla Bass for the television series Dewarists, and many others. Apart from this, I have some Bollywood projects I’m working on. One is Bombay’s Most Wanted, which Aditya Bhattacharya has directed. I have composed the music and background score for the movie.
